Common Grades of Austenitic Stainless Steels

 

300 series stainless steel is the larger subgroup and has a much wider range of applications than the 200 series. The most common austenitic stainless-steel grades are from the 300 series.

 

Type 304
Not only is it the most popular type of austenitic stainless steel, 304 is the most common type of stainless steel. With high content of nickel and chromium, this grade possesses a desirable combination of strength, corrosion resistance, and fabricability.

 

Type 316
As the second most used grade of stainless steel, 316 is very similar to 304. However, the addition of Molybdenum gives it an increased resistance to corrosion and higher heat resistance.

 

Type 310
This grade has a high chromium and medium nickel content that makes it highly resistant to oxidation and corrosion. It is used for high temperature applications.

 

Type 321

Cutting Method of High Performance Austenitic Stainless Steels

 

 

Water jet cutting

Water jet cutting is the use of nozzles to generate high-pressure water jets carrying fine abrasive particles for cutting. This method is very effective for cutting gold and non-metallic materials. The process uses high capacity pumps and the water and electricity requirements are very high.

 

Plasma cutting

Plasma cutting is the most commonly used method for cutting all grades of austenitic stainless steel plates with a thickness of 25mm and above. The design of the plasma gun significantly improves the accuracy and cutting quality, and is an ideal process for cutting straight lines or special shapes.

 

Laser cutting

In laser cutting, a laser beam melts the material while a nitrogen jet blows the melt away from the cut. Nitrogen prevents oxidation and loss of corrosion resistance. When laser cutting stainless steel, the nitrogen pressure is greater than the oxygen pressure when cutting carbon steel. In order to effectively blow away the molten metal, the nitrogen pressure needs to increase as the thickness of the material increases.
