The sulphur addition which is responsible for the improved machining and galling characteristics of Grade 303 lowers its corrosion resistance to below that of Grade 304. As for other austenitic grades the structure gives 303 excellent toughness, although the sulphur in 303 reduces its toughness slightly.
Grade 303Se (UNS S30323) has a selenium rather than sulphur addition, improving the hot and cold forming characteristics over those of 303 and providing a smoother machined surface finish. The machinability rate is also slightly reduced.

Chemical Composition
Carbon (C): The content is ≤0.15%. The control of carbon content helps maintain the toughness and corrosion resistance of the steel, and at the same time avoids the generation of excessive carbides during processing, which affects the cutting performance.
Silicon (Si): The content is ≤1.00%. Silicon mainly plays the role of deoxidation and strengthening ferrite in steel. An appropriate amount of silicon helps to improve the strength and hardness of the steel, but an excessively high content will reduce the toughness and cutting performance of the steel.
Manganese (Mn): The content is ≤2.00%. Manganese can improve the strength and hardness of the steel, and can also form manganese sulfide with sulfur to improve the cutting performance of the steel.
Sulfur (S): The content is ≥0.15%, which is a key element for 303 stainless steel bars to achieve good machinability. Sulfur forms iron sulfide with iron, which plays a role in chip breaking and lubrication during cutting, making cutting smoother.
Phosphorus (P): The content is ≤0.20%. Phosphorus can improve the strength and hardness of the steel to a certain extent, but an excessively high content will lead to a decrease in the toughness of the steel. In 303 stainless steel bars, the content of phosphorus needs to be controlled within a certain range to ensure the comprehensive performance of the steel.
Chromium (Cr): The content is between 17.00% and 19.00%. Chromium is the main element that makes stainless steel have corrosion resistance. It can form a dense chromium oxide film on the surface of the steel to prevent the internal metal from being further oxidized and corroded.
Nickel (Ni): The content is between 8.00% and 10.00%. Nickel can improve the toughness, corrosion resistance and high-temperature oxidation resistance of the steel. Together with chromium, it enables stainless steel to have good comprehensive performance.
Molybdenum (Mo): It can be added with a content of ≤0.60%. The addition of molybdenum can further improve the corrosion resistance of the steel, especially the corrosion resistance to chloride-containing atmospheres, and also improve the strength and hardness of the steel.

Processing Notes
Cutting Processing: Although 303 stainless steel bars have good machinability, it is still necessary to select appropriate tools and cutting parameters during cutting to give full play to their machinability and improve processing efficiency and quality.
Welding Processing: Welding is relatively difficult. Sulfur accumulation is likely to occur in high-temperature areas, leading to material embrittlement. Therefore, appropriate welding processes and measures need to be taken during welding, such as selecting suitable welding materials and controlling welding temperature and speed.
Cold Working Forming: The cold working forming performance is poor. When performing cold working, attention should be paid to the selection of processing techniques and parameters to avoid cracks or other defects in the material.
