Description
444 stainless steel tube

The 444 stainless steel tube is a ferritic, non-hardenable alloy that offers excellent corrosion resistance, particularly in environments where there is a risk of crevice corrosion and pitting. This type of stainless steel is known for its low carbon content, which contributes to its stability against intergranular corrosion when exposed to high temperatures.

Characteristics:

Excellent corrosion resistance, especially against crevice corrosion and pitting

Good oxidation resistance at elevated temperatures

High strength and toughness

Good formability and weldability

Low carbon content for enhanced intergranular corrosion resistance

Process

Tube billet preparation: First, the prepared tube billets must be inspected. The quality of the tube billets directly affects quality of the final stainless steel tubes. The material and dimensional accuracy of the tube billets must meet the production requirements. For example, the chemical composition of the billet must meet the compositional standards of 444 stainless steel, which includes ultra-low carbon and nitrogen, 18% chromium, and % molybdenum, and ensure the uniformity of each element's content.

Heating the tube billet: After the tube billet is prepared it is heated. The heating temperature is high, generally around 1250°C, and the fuel in the heating tube is mostly acetylene oron. This heating process allows the tube billet to reach the appropriate rolling temperature for subsequent processing and shaping.

Piercing and rolling: After the tube bil is heated, it needs to be pierced and then rolled. Piercing is done using a conical drill bit that rotates at high speed to form the raw tube of the steel pipe. This step has high requirements for equipment and technology, as the quality of the piercing, such as the dimensional accuracy and shape of the hole, can the quality of the subsequent steel pipe. Post-treatment: After rolling, the raw tube needs to be heated, sized, heat treated, and straightened. treatment can improve the properties of the steel pipe, such as increasing its strength and toughness. The straightening operation ensures the straightness of the steel pipe to meet and installation requirements. Finally, after finishing and inspection, the product is stored in the warehouse.

Chemical Composition:

The chemical composition of 444 stainless steel typically includes:

Chromium (Cr): 17.50-19.50%

Nickel (Ni): 1.00% maximum

Molybdenum (Mo): 1.75-2.50%

Manganese (Mn): 1.00% maximum

Silicon (Si): 1.00% maximum

Carbon (C): 0.025% maximum

Phosphorus (P): 0.040% maximum

Sulfur (S): 0.030% maximum

National Specifications and Grades:

In the United States, 444 stainless steel is covered by the ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials) specification A268. The corresponding grade for 444 stainless steel is TP444, where "TP" stands for "Tube and Pipe." In Europe, the EN (European Norm) equivalent is EN 1.4521.

FAQs:

Q: What is the difference between 444 and 316 stainless steel?

A: 444 stainless steel is a ferritic alloy with excellent corrosion resistance, especially against crevice corrosion and pitting, while 316 stainless steel is an austenitic alloy that offers better overall corrosion resistance, including resistance to chloride environments. 316 also has better formability and weldability compared to 444.

Q: Can 444 stainless steel tubes be used in marine environments?

A: Yes, 444 stainless steel tubes can be used in marine environments due to their excellent resistance to crevice corrosion and pitting, which are common issues in saltwater conditions.

Q: Is 444 stainless steel magnetic?

A: Yes, 444 stainless steel is magnetic due to its ferritic structure. This property can be beneficial in applications where magnetic materials are required.
